A recent report, by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has highlighted the increasing concern about how misinformation’s impacting freedom globally. Titled “Misinformation and International Religious Freedom ” the report delves into how false information spread is being used to fuel intolerance, discrimination and violence against minority groups.
USCIRF Chair Nadine Maenza emphasized the gravity of the situation stating that misinformation poses a threat to religious freedom. She noted that malicious actors are utilizing media and digital platforms to disseminate inaccuracies that vilify communities and instigate attacks against them.
The report draws attention to instances in countries such as India, Nigeria and Myanmar where viral misinformation campaigns have led to assaults on religious minorities. For example in India unfounded allegations about Muslims participating in “love jihad” have contributed to an escalation in violence against the population. In Nigeria misinformation regarding Boko Haram has worsened tensions between Christians and Muslims. Meanwhile in Myanmar the military regime has manipulated falsehoods about the Rohingya people to justify their actions.
USCIRF Commissioner Frederick A. Davie pointed out that misinformation not infringes upon the right, to freedom of religion or belief but also has real world consequences by inciting violence and persecution.
“We are witnessing the impact of hate, on at risk religious groups. A call to action in the report urges governments, tech companies and society to address the spread of information. Recommendations include enhancing literacy improving content monitoring and being more transparent about advertisements and automated accounts.
Maenza emphasized the need for an effort to safeguard religious freedom in the digital era. Everyone plays a part in combatting narratives that threaten this human right.
