Geneva, Switzerland – The Coordination of Associations and Individuals for Freedom of Conscience (CAP LC) has issued an urgent appeal to the German government during the 55th session of the Human Rights Council, urging an immediate halt to the deportation of Ahmadi asylum seekers to Pakistan. This call for action was made following the review of Germany’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) outcome on 22 March 2024.

While we commend Germany for its active participation in the UPR process and its acceptance of numerous recommendations that reaffirm its dedication to human rights and democracy, we are deeply troubled by its recent decision to deport Ahmadi asylum seekers back to Pakistan. This decision poses a grave risk to the lives and freedoms of these individuals, who are part of a persecuted religious minority.

In Pakistan, Ahmadis are subjected to severe discrimination, violence, and legal restrictions that prevent them from identifying as Muslims and freely practicing their faith. The persecution they face is well-documented, including in the 3rd Federal Government report on the world situation regarding freedom of religion and belief. By choosing to deport Ahmadis to a country where they are in imminent danger, Germany contradicts its international obligations to protect those fleeing from persecution.

The case of Mr. Faiz Ahmad, an Ahmadi asylum seeker facing imminent deportation, underscores the urgency of this issue. Despite presenting evidence of the threats against him in Pakistan, his request for asylum was unjustly denied. This decision not only endangers Mr. Ahmad’s life but also sets a concerning precedent for the treatment of other asylum seekers in similar situations.

The CAP LC implores the German government to immediately cease the deportation of Ahmadi asylum seekers. We urge Germany to recognize the severe implications of its actions and to grant asylum to Ahmadis who are at risk of persecution. It is imperative that Germany upholds its commitment to protecting the fundamental human rights of all individuals, regardless of their religious beliefs.

This appeal is not just a call for action but a reminder of the values that the international community, including Germany, has pledged to uphold. We stand ready to support the German government in finding humane and just solutions for Ahmadi asylum seekers and all individuals seeking refuge from persecution.
