In a turn of events involving violence and prejudice, against the Ahmadi community in Pakistan Dr. Abdul Salam, a respected Ahmadi physician was tragically killed outside his clinic in Gujrat. This unfortunate incident occurred on July 27 2024 shedding light on the entrenched persecution experienced by the Ahmadi minority in Pakistan.
The untimely death of Dr. Salam is part of a pattern of targeted violence directed at the Ahmadi community. As per reports from sources such as Voice of America VoicePK.net and Naya Daur the 50 year old doctor was fatally shot by assailants while exiting his clinic. This shocking event has reverberated within both global communities sparking concerns regarding the safety and well being of Ahmadis residing in Pakistan.
The assassination of Dr. Salam occurred after a statement made by UN Special Rapporteurs condemning the persistent discrimination and violence faced by Ahmadis in Pakistan. These UN experts have called for a halt to persecution and have urged the Pakistani government to take decisive actions to safeguard the rights and lives of individuals within the Ahmadi community.
In their statement the Special Rapporteurs stressed that “The systematic mistreatment, defamation and aggression against Ahmadis, in Pakistan must cease without delay. It is incumbent upon the authorities to guarantee the protection and security of all its citizens of their religious affiliations.”The global community should also hold Pakistan responsible, for fulfilling its obligations regarding rights. The Coordination of Associations and Individuals for Freedom of Conscience echoes the concerns expressed by UN experts. We stand in unity with the Ahmadi community. Urge action from Pakistani authorities. This includes conducting an unbiased investigation into Dr. Salams murder ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice and implementing measures to prevent further violence and discrimination.
The targeting of Ahmadi professionals, such as doctors, not deprives the community of contributors but also breeds fear and insecurity among its members. It is crucial for the Pakistani government to show its dedication to safeguarding the rights and lives of all citizens by addressing this concerning issue
We urge the community to support the UNs call for action and exert pressure on the government to uphold its commitments to human rights. The brutal killing of Dr. Abdul Salam should not be. Forgotten. It serves as a reminder of the need for justice, protection and equality for the Ahmadi community in Pakistan.
